Sen. Grassley says the Arctic Frost probe gathered data on at least 639,000 Republicans, MAGA hat buyers included. The memo has no response from Smith.
Donors who gave as little as $1 appear in records gathered by Jack Smith's office, according to a memo released Wednesday by Sen. Chuck Grassley, the Republican chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee.
The number: at least 639,000 Republican donors, voters and supporters. The memo says Smith's office and the Biden Justice Department obtained that information during the Arctic Frost investigation into efforts to overturn the 2020 election results.
What was in the files
Names, birth dates, home addresses and email addresses. Party registration and legislative districts. Occupations and employers, from janitor to logger. Donation amounts, generally under $1,000, plus the last four digits of credit cards. The earliest donation dates to 2005.
Fox News Digital, which obtained the memo, reports that about 148,000 entries were labeled as donors. The memo does not say how many of the 639,000 gave money.
The MAGA hat list
Red MAGA hat buyers are in there too, the memo says, with names, purchases and shipping addresses. The release links to a call sheet, a merchandise catalogue and hat orders. WECU News has not independently reviewed those documents.
Grassley's take
Grassley says Smith and the Biden Justice Department "collected incredibly invasive donor data" and aimed "to map out the entire Republican Party apparatus." He wants Democrats to join his oversight work.
It is not the first release
On Sept. 29, Grassley's office said Smith's team subpoenaed at least 4,782 donor checks from people in all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico. The checks show home addresses, bank account and routing numbers and signatures, and some were for as little as $1.
What the memo leaves out
The memo does not say who produced the records, why they were obtained or whether any of the data was used. It includes no response from Smith, the Justice Department or the FBI.
At a recent hearing, Smith confirmed his office "acquired financial information" and said he had a duty to gather facts in a serious criminal investigation, according to the Fox News Digital report. Fox says it contacted Smith's law firm, and its report includes no reply.
These are Grassley's figures. They come from one party's committee chairman, and WECU News has not independently verified them.
