About WECU News

Lynn Matthews, founder and editor of WECU News

WECU News is an independent digital newsroom founded by Lynn Matthews, a journalist, editor, and publisher who got tired of watching stories get bent, buried, or silenced before readers ever got the full picture.

The moment that stuck with her: in 1992, NBC aired a segment claiming a truck’s gas tank would explode on impact — footage millions of people believed, until it came out that NBC had rigged the truck with hidden rockets to guarantee the fireball. The network apologized on air. The story only came apart because someone with the resources to check actually checked.

That’s the standard WECU News is built on: don’t repeat the summary, find the source. Check the transcript. Check the database. Check it yourself before you believe either side’s version of it.

Before founding WECU, Lynn spent more than two decades practicing as a dentist — a background that shaped the same instinct that drives her reporting: check the evidence yourself before you trust the diagnosis.

WECU exists because a platform can quietly bury a well-sourced, true story whenever it’s inconvenient — but a legitimate press entity, publishing its own reporting on its own site, can’t be silenced that way. That protection only means something if the reporting behind it is honest, sourced, and correctable when it gets something wrong. That’s the bar every piece on this site is held to.

What we cover
