Dr. Ben Carson, the retired pediatric neurosurgeon who ran for president in 2016 and later served as secretary of Housing and Urban Development, returned to United Patriots Uprising for a wide-ranging conversation with host Gary Binford about socialism, the American family and the coming midterm elections. The episode was posted on Binford's YouTube channel on Oct. 12, about three weeks before Election Day.

A decline he calls planned

Binford opened by asking what has happened to the country since Carson's two appearances on the show in 2022. Carson said anyone who has read history would recognize that "this is the course that was planned for a long time." He pointed to a list of 45 communist goals that Rep. A.S. Herlong of Florida entered into the Congressional Record on Jan. 10, 1963. Carson said the list includes gaining control of schools and teachers' unions, gaining control of television, Hollywood and the news media, and "placing the family secondary to the government." He called the list "very accurate."

Carson said the plan depends on public deception. "You have to dumb down the population first," he said, adding that people who lack basic civic knowledge are "very easy to manipulate." He accused the mainstream media of withholding information and compared the tactic to Joseph Goebbels and the "big lie repeated over and over again."

Socialism, communism and the Second Amendment

Binford asked why voters in cities long run by Democrats keep returning to the party. Carson said they are "just listening to what they are told to listen to." He said some people can see through it, and asked whether they outnumber those who cannot. Carson said socialists have viewed government control of health care as "the lynch pin for opening socialism in the country," and that Lenin said the goal of socialism is communism.

He pointed to the deaths of "tens of millions" of people under communist governments in China and the Soviet Union, and to Cuba. "The only thing that would keep it from happening here is a Second Amendment," Carson said.

Carson said many people who claim to believe the Bible overlook the tenth commandment, "Thou shalt not covet," which he described as the basis of the argument that someone who has more should have it taken. In his telling, the American dream was to use God-given talents and opportunity to build your own life. He said it has been "mutated" into an expectation that others will provide.

The family and the birth rate

Binford asked about Carson's 2024 book, The Perilous Fight, and whether the country is winning the war on the family. "Unfortunately, we're not winning the war," Carson said. He said family formation has slowed and that the birth rate has fallen from 3.6 children per woman in the 1960s to 1.6 now, when it takes 2.5 to maintain the population. He tied that decline to immigration, saying the country was "being replaced" during the Biden administration, that the flow has largely stopped under the current administration, and that Democrats would "open the floodgates again" if they returned to power.

Carson also took up the way American history is taught. He said slavery existed in virtually every society, but that few nations fought a civil war to end it, and that the Underground Railroad deserves more attention. He said critical race theory and the 1619 Project would have people believe America is an evil country, and that mistakes do not make it one. "We're not each other's enemies," he said, adding that the most right-wing and most left-wing person probably agree on about 80 percent of issues.

What he says is at stake in the midterms

Binford asked how important the midterms are. Carson said the country is "probably as close to getting changed to something else as we have ever been." If the left wins, he said, it will make changes that leave Republicans little chance of returning, including stacking the Supreme Court and making Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico states so they can each add two senators. He urged listeners to act. "We all have a sphere of influence and this is the time to use it," he said.

Carson also addressed gas prices. He said consumer spending is up, that incomes and 401(k) accounts have risen, and that higher prices therefore hurt less. "Sky is not falling," he said. He tied the prices to "the war that's going on" and asked, "Would you rather have $3 a gallon and Iran with a nuclear weapon?"

Election integrity

Asked whether enough has been done to protect the election, Carson said there are "huge issues." He credited the Republican win in 2024 to volunteers who monitored voting sites, saying the party asked for 100,000 and received 230,000. Without the same level of enthusiasm this year, he said, "the cheating will go on." He said the only reason to oppose the SAVE Act is that opponents "want to cheat." He also pointed to the weeks it took to count ballots in California in the last election, compared with a day or a couple of days in red states, and said the delay exists "because people need a lot of time to manufacture those ballots."

Where to find Carson's work

Carson leads the American Cornerstone Institute, which he said stands for faith, liberty, community and life. Its children's program, Little Patriots, offers free lessons and animations on American history. The institute also offers a free-to-stream feature film, Star Spangled Adventures. He also described Executive Branch for America, a program that prepares aspiring leaders in the early to middle part of their careers for public service.

Binford closed by repeating Carson's line that "God gave us a brain" and that people should use it, and urged listeners to win the midterms and the next presidential election. WECU News has a content relationship with United Patriots Uprising, and this write-up is based on the episode transcript.
