Agents searched the home of Stephen Cloobeck, who cut ties with the former congressman in April.
Federal agents searched a Beverly Hills mansion early Tuesday as part of the investigation into former Rep. Eric Swalwell. The home belongs to billionaire Stephen Cloobeck, a donor who says he cut ties with Swalwell after sexual misconduct allegations surfaced. Swalwell has denied criminal wrongdoing.
What We Know About the Search
The search began around 7 a.m. on Roxbury Drive. An FBI spokesperson said agents conducted an operation in the Los Angeles region related to “an ongoing criminal investigation” and had no further comment. The court documents are sealed, and the affidavit behind the warrant has not been made public. No arrests were reported.
The Associated Press, citing a law enforcement official and two people familiar with the case, said Swalwell spent time at the home before he resigned from Congress in April.
Who Is Stephen Cloobeck
Cloobeck founded the timeshare company Diamond Resorts International. In April he told the New York Post that he cut ties with Swalwell: “I am no longer associated with a man that takes advantage of women. I support women’s rights.” ABC7 reported that Cloobeck said he kicked Swalwell out of the home after the allegations.
Fox LA reported that Cloobeck was arrested in May in West Hollywood on witness-tampering charges and pleaded not guilty. The AP said it left a message for a lawyer who represented him in another matter.
The Allegations and the Investigations
The federal inquiry is one of several that began after a woman came forward with allegations that Swalwell sexually assaulted her twice, including when she worked for him. CNN reported that three other women alleged other kinds of misconduct, including unsolicited explicit messages or nude photos.
In August, federal agents seized electronic devices from Swalwell at San Francisco International Airport and searched his Washington home. The Manhattan District Attorney’s office has said it is also investigating after a former staffer said Swalwell raped her at a New York hotel during a 2024 charity gala. Los Angeles prosecutors are reportedly weighing charges.
Swalwell’s Response
Swalwell ended his campaign for California governor and resigned from Congress earlier this year. He has said he will “fight the serious, false allegation” made against him, and that he must take responsibility for mistakes he made in the past. No one has been charged. The AP said it left a message for his lawyer.
What Is Still Unknown
The sealed affidavit means the reason for the search has not been made public. The FBI has not said what agents were looking for or whether charges will follow.
