Musk Floats an Amazon Rival After Users Say Grok Shopping Bots Were Blocked

Amazon has not commented on the Grok block. Last month it confirmed it shut out Meta's shopping agent and said such agents should operate transparently.

Elon Musk wrote "Maybe we should start a competitor to Amazon" on X on Thursday, after a user said Amazon is blocking Grok shopping bots from placing orders.

The user, who posts as @thecsguy, wrote that one of his Grok bots handles only his Amazon returns. That is one person's claim. Amazon has not confirmed it, and representatives for Amazon and Musk did not respond to Moneywise's request for comment.

Musk has announced no product, timeline or funding. Users suggested names, including "X Shop" and "grokazon".

What the bots do

Grok Bot is described as an xAI agent that acts for a user inside apps, including shopping sites. It can buy things on the user's behalf, which is why a block at the checkout matters to people who use it.

Musk's answer so far

Before floating a rival, Musk told users to shop elsewhere: "Just ask Grok @Bot to buy what you want someplace else and get a better deal." Teslarati also reports that on Oct. 10 a user said Amazon was blocking the bot, and Musk replied by showing an order Grok placed on Lego's website.

Another user posted an error message reading, "Continued access by an unauthorized AI agent violates Amazon's Conditions of Use." WECU News could not verify that screenshot. The wording matches the warning Meta's Muse users saw in September.

What Amazon has said about shopping agents

Amazon has not addressed Grok. It did block Meta's Muse agent on Sept. 21 and explained why. Amazon said Muse "does not identify itself" and "appears to capture and store customer credentials and scrape account data." Its broader position is that shopping agents "should operate transparently."

Who pays if a bot gets it wrong

Musk also wrote that if Grok Bot makes a mistake or leaks a card ("never happened yet"), "SpaceX will make you whole." Teslarati notes that this is a post, not a published policy, and reports that the company's consumer terms make users responsible for their agents' actions and generally cap liability at the greater of fees paid or $100. WECU News has not read those terms.

The reaction

Paul Graham, a Y Combinator co-founder, wrote that "Amazon banning agents is the first opportunity I've seen since Amazon was founded." Musk shared the post with the caption "Seriously." Investor Chamath Palihapitiya argued that the future of e-commerce is merchants opening their inventory to AI agents through a standard called the Model Context Protocol.

For now this is a post. No product, plan or timeline has been announced, and Amazon has said nothing publicly about Grok.
