Musk Says Grok Bot Will Use Rival AI Models. He Has Not Said What Data They Get

Analysis: SpaceX will send some Grok Bot tasks to Claude Opus 5.5, MidJourney, Suno, and other APIs. Which tasks, what data, and whether users can opt out are unanswered.

Musk Says Grok Bot Will Use Rival AI Models. He Has Not Said What Data They Get

Elon Musk says SpaceX will use "the best back end model for any given task" for Grok Bot, "including Claude Opus 5.5, MidJourney, Suno and other leading APIs." His post says the aim is "whatever is most likely to give you the best outcome." The three names are examples. The post does not say Grok models will stop being used.

Grok Bot is a service for handing work to AI agents that run on cloud computers and keep working after users step away. SpaceXAI introduced the beta on August 11. It now operates inside SpaceX, which acquired xAI earlier this year. SpaceX's prospectus puts that acquisition at February 2.

The post leaves the practical questions open. It does not say which tasks go to which provider, or how the choice is made. It does not say whether users can see which model handled a request, or choose one. It does not say what data is sent to those outside services, whether users can turn the routing off, or what any of it costs. It is addressed to Grok Bot. It does not say whether the same rule will apply to other SpaceXAI products.

Those gaps matter because of what the product already does. The August introduction says Bots share a computer of their own in the cloud and can sign in and work across apps, tools, and websites. Grok Bot's terms say Bots may access websites, execute code, modify files, and communicate on a user's behalf, and that the service may retain customer data, files, browser sessions, credentials, memory, and routines. Musk's post does not say how any of that applies when a task is sent to an outside model. In a reply, one user asked, "Can we opt out of this? I don't want the data I share with my Grok Bots going to Anthropic." The post does not answer that.

Musk opt out

Musk framed the decision as picking the best tool for each job. For a company that builds its own models, naming outside providers is a notable choice. How it works in practice depends on answers SpaceX has not yet given.
