Sixteen days ago, WECU News reported that Louisiana was on the verge of landing a SpaceX spaceport on roughly 130,000 acres of coastal marsh near Pecan Island in Vermilion Parish, tied to a legislature that had already built the legal groundwork to receive it. On Tuesday, SpaceX made it official.
The company announced a $100 billion investment to build “Starbase, Louisiana” on land in Vermilion Parish — SpaceX’s fourth and largest launch facility, with five launch complexes, a propellant production facility and on-site housing for employees at full buildout. Gov. Jeff Landry called it the largest capital investment in state history, pushing Louisiana’s total new investment past $250 million under his administration. Construction is expected to begin in 2027, with the first launch targeted for as early as 2029.
The official numbers track closely with what this outlet reported before the announcement: a coastal Vermilion Parish site secured through the state’s settlement of long-running litigation against ExxonMobil, a south-facing Gulf launch corridor that avoids flying over population centers, and a legislative session that quietly built a legal foundation — including Act 874’s liability shield for aerospace companies with at least 20,000 contiguous acres in the state — before any company had confirmed a project.
SpaceX’s own announcement Tuesday confirmed several other details WECU News had flagged as still unofficial in early August: the land was acquired through the state’s sale of the former Exxon property, and Vermilion Parish will receive $25 million annually for 25 years, with an escalator clause, plus a $20 million upfront payment — more than $820 million in direct local payments over the life of the deal. The company said it will also pursue a “historic coastal restoration” partnership with the state as part of the project.
The Angle Still Missing From National Coverage
What Tuesday’s wire coverage still isn’t reporting is why SpaceX needs this specific stretch of coastline at all. The site’s near-polar, sun-synchronous launch corridor over open water is the same geography this outlet identified as ideally suited to a separate SpaceX project: Starmind, the company’s satellite-based orbital AI computing constellation, first-generation hardware for which SpaceX has already filed with the FCC to launch up to 1 million units.
Neither SpaceX’s Tuesday statement nor Gov. Landry’s remarks mentioned Starmind by name. But the infrastructure being built in Vermilion Parish — a launch cadence capable of supporting “more than 30 Starship flights per day,” according to Elon Musk’s own social media post Tuesday — is difficult to explain by satellite broadband and crewed missions alone. If Starbase, Louisiana becomes the primary launch site for Starmind’s constellation, as this outlet reported was plausible in August, Vermilion Parish won’t just be building rockets. It will be building the launch infrastructure for orbital AI data centers — a story state officials have yet to publicly confirm, and one the rest of the coverage hasn’t caught up to yet.
